JBL Flip 5 review
There aren't many goods that gain universal approval. Everything from cars to kitchen knives has various reviews and opinions for customers to consider before purchasing. That isn't the case with low-cost, waterproof Bluetooth speakers. For years, my recommendation has been to acquire the JBL Flip if you want a speaker to carry to the beach and won't break the budget. While the Flip 4 has been the standard for a few years, we now have the JBL Flip 5, so how does it compare?
Editor's note: On September 30, 2021, this JBL Flip 5 review was revised to address various FAQs, update the price, and manage the JBL Flip 6.
Who is the JBL Flip 5 aimed at?
Singing showers The IPX7 grade means that it is entirely waterproof. Sure, it's great for poolside jams, but it's also great for listening to music in the shower.
Anyone looking for their first Bluetooth speaker. While it isn't considerably better than the Flip 4, the USB-C input allows you to future-proof your purchase.
Someone who plans to spend time outside. The Flip series has always been a great companion for those who enjoy hiking, camping, or simply going to the beach, and the Flip 5 is no exception.
What's the build quality of the Flip 5?
If the JBL Flip series is recognized for anything, it's toughness. The Flip series began as splashproof and progressed to being entirely waterproof—as is still the case with the new JBL Flip 5. It's encased in a tough fabric that gives it an IPX7 grade, which means it can withstand being submerged in up to three feet of water. A strong rubber on either end of the speaker protects the exposed bass radiators.
The power and Bluetooth pairing buttons, as well as the USB-C input for charging the speaker, are located on the rear of the speaker. When the speaker is turned on and connected to a source device, both of these buttons have lights around them. It's a useful feature that I wish was also employed on the fabric-built playback buttons. While it's simple to tell which button is whose because they protrude slightly from the cloth, I think they'd be much easier to use in low light circumstances if they glowed up or were painted a different color.
How long does the battery of the JBL Flip 5 last?
JBL says that the JBL Flip 5 would provide 12 hours of continuous playback. In our testing, we got 9 hours and 27 minutes, which isn't terrible but falls just short of the stated 12 hours. Still, it's more than enough for a day at the beach or a day hike.
How does the JBL Flip 5 sound?
Before reading too much into a significantly smoothed graphic, keep in mind that the Flip 5 is a low-cost Bluetooth speaker. The roll-off at 60Hz is something you can ignore entirely, but you'll have to live with it no matter what speaker you buy for less than a few hundred dollars. Furthermore, because you'll most likely be using this in less-than-ideal conditions, this is only a ballpark measurement to give you a rough idea of the Flip 5's performance and only a rough estimate. Because you're not going to be listening to this in a sound-dampened or anechoic environment, it won't always be indicative of what you'll hear. You'll be listening to it in a room or a noisy environment.
Should you get the JBL Flip 5?
If you don't already have a Bluetooth speaker and are looking for an affordable speaker to knock around on your next adventure, the JBL Flip 5 is absolutely worth it. It has a rugged, waterproof fabric, good sound, decent battery life, and its portable size makes it an excellent option for just about everyone. For those who already have a JBL Flip 4, there is absolutely no reason to rush out and upgrade, though.
